Katharine’s Wish–Everett/Rhoten Family Fund

Katharine’s Wish is a fund to help children in hospitals receive new toys and books while undergoing treatment.

About the Fund

Katharine's Wish.org is a promise kept by Katie Rhoten of Eau Claire, WI. In January of 2008, Katie was on vacation in Florida when she was rushed by ambulance from a Disney theme park to an ICU and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

The hospital was a very scary place for the then 9-year-old. However, the pain of this experience was lessened because each time Katie had a poke or procedure, she was given a stuffed animal to ease the pain and distract her. She vowed to help other children who were sick and scared while receiving medical care.

Since her diagnosis, Katie has donated over 20,000 new toys, books, and stuffed animals to more than 70 hospitals and clinics throughout the entire United States.  In 2012, Katie also established her own donor-advised fund with the Eau Claire Community Foundation – the youngest member in the Foundation’s history.

To date Katie has raised nearly $50,000 to help issue grants to hospitals, and by the end of 2016 she will have reached her original goal of making a donation to hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. More information can be found at www.KatharinesWish.org.
